Today, you’ll be exploring the major highlights of Cabo. From spending a relaxing time at Medano Beach to sailing over the crystal blue waters to see Land’s End arch, you’ll pretty much get familiar with what Cabo has to offer during your vacation.

Spend some time at Medano Beach

Medano Beach is the heart and soul of Cabo San Lucas. Bustling with day-trippers, vacationers, honeymooners, and party-lovers, this beach has been a home-side paradise for all sorts of travellers. Medano Beach is only meant for one thing, and that’s ‘relaxation’. If you’ve had jet lag, there’s no better recovery spot than taking a nice nap under a shade at Medano. With a couple of drinks and a nice Mexican lunch, you could possibly have the best start to your Cabo vacation. And if relaxation isn’t your thing, you could always have a go at parasailing or jet skiing at Medano Beach.

Visit Land’s End arch & Lover’s Beach

I recommend taking up this guided tour to The Arch and Lover’s Beach late in the afternoon. This half-day excursion is one of the top-rated tours of Cabo and takes you on a short yet special journey to unravel the beauty of Los Cabos. Many travellers don’t prefer hiking during leisure trip and that’s why its best to recommend an alternative in place.

The Sierra de la Laguna Mountain range is a majestic experience for those who are adventure junkies. From varied difficulty hikes serving different panoramic views to dense wilderness that house amazing animal species, the Sierra mountains is a diverse range of canyons, dry plains and dramatic cliffs. The area has been attracting visitors from all over the world due to its vastness and abundant opportunities to hike and camp. Apart from the adventure side of it, the Sierra de la Laguna is home to two important Mexican species – purple heads (Calypte costae) and Xantus hummingbirds (Hylocharis xantusii). If lucky, you’d be able to spot them on your hike!

On the other hand, those looking to visit Todos Santos won’t be disappointed with its laidback lifestyle. This small beach town has been home to only 5,000 inhabitants, but its still considered to be one of the most unspolit gems of Mexico. The town’s natural beauty, its cultural atmosphere, and great hospitality keeps alive the traditional roots. When it comes to exploring Todos Santos, there’s a lot to discover in this pretty town.

The foremost thing you need to do is walk around the historical center. You’d be simply amazed by the beautiful architecture and colonial-styled buildings lining-up next to each other. Along with its structures, you’d surely admire the lively markets, local craft shops and galleries housing up the historical centre. The next place you do not want to miss, is the famous Punta Lobos Beach. It’s an excellent spot to surf and sunbathe, as there is barely any tourists crowding up this beach. Alternatively, you can also spend some at Cerritos Beach.

Travel Tip: If you want to take your excursion a little further, I highly recommend visiting Playa Balandra which is 1.5 hour drive north of Todos Santos. Playa Balandra has been regarded as the country’s most beautiful beach featuring striking views, stunning tones, and amazing surfing opportunities.

Day 3 | Visit Cabo Pulmo National Park

Cabo Pulmo National Park is the highlight of your short 5-day Cabo itinerary. This gorgeous UNESCO World Heritage site is set amidst a beautiful area fringed by lush-green forests, picturesque mountains, and far-fetched coastal views. The Cabo Pulmo Park is also a marine national park, housing rich aquatic wildlife and biodiversity that greatly rivals the likes of the Galapagos and Great Barrier Reef.

Cabo Pulmo National Park is located across the East Cape of Baja California Sur, which is very close to the other Mexican cities. Despite its proximity, the entire national park is unspoiled with crowded tourists and daily activities. However, on weekends you’d find most day-trippers exploring the national park’s hiking trails and snorkelling sites.

While I recommend exploring the national park on your own, you wouldn’t want to miss out on experiencing these activities at Cabo Pulmo –

Explore Diving Sites: The Cabo Pulmo National Park has gained tremendous fame for its various diving spots. You can find some of the best diving sites here, and you’re often treated with marine life, such as sharks, sea turtles, and jackfish.

Go Snorkelling: Like diving, snorkelling is another popular adventure here at Cabo Pulmo. You don’t need an expert to come along and guide you, as you can simply wander off on your own. However, if you still need one – you can get yourself a guided snorkelling experience. Some of the best sites to snorkel include visiting El Arbelito, Las Navajas, and El Rinconcito & El Rincon.

Day 4 | Explore Downtown Cabo

A trip to Cabo San Lucas feels purely incomplete if you don’t visit Downtown Cabo. It’s one of the liveliest hubs of the city, boasting fascinating Mexican cuisine, traditional art and culture, museums, rowdy nightlife, trendy bars and pubs, and much more. For shopping lovers, Downtown Cabo is nothing but bliss. Most markets in this part of the city offer budgeted souvenirs and items to tourists travelling. This ultimately places one of the cheapest places to grab something you love!

Downtown Cabo is pretty much yours to explore! This is where you have the flexibility to choose how you want to spend your time. Moreover, if you want my advice – I would ideally suggest you indulge in their innovative fusion food. From traditional eatery shops to family-oriented restaurants, Downtown Cabo hosts a wonderfully rich environment for those who’d love to indulge in authentic regional food.

If you’re unsure what to try while food hopping across the stalls, then make a note to try these special classics – Chilaquiles, Pozole, Tacos al pastor, Chiles en nogada, and Enchiladas. You’d find these almost anywhere in Downtown Cabo.

Alternatively, if you’re a party animal, Downtown Cabo won’t disappoint you with its raw nightlife scenes. Live music performances and popular band shows are a thing here; you’d find these events almost anywhere. Especially places like Cabo Blue and Cabo Lounge. Faraway is known to host some popular names during their events.

Day 5 | Depart Cabo

From beach-side resorts and luxurious villas to city centre hotels and apartments, Cabo San Lucas is home to plenty of accommodation options. The first thing you need to do is to plan your stay well, as the bookings for Cabos’ best properties often gets sold out quickly. Its important to do a good research on hotels and resorts that offer better rates for particular seasons. I’d highly recommend checking out Tripadvisor, as they give you a detailed comparison rate offered by different hotel booking engines. You can then make a wise decision of saving up a lot by booking the cheapest one.

The second thing you need to consider for your 5 day Cabo itinerary is – where you want to be located for 5 days. For example, Palmilla and Pedregal is a super cozy, friendly neighbourhood with tons of options for all budget/mid-budget travellers. Pederegal is more closer to the Pacific Coast, and thus landmarks like Land’s End arch & Lover’s Beach can be at your nearest vicinity. Before I get to the itinerary part, it’s important to list down a few essential planning tips. This is just a high overview of what you can expect before you travel to Machu Picchu in Peru. I’ll also ensure to link you through important resources & helpful guides for planning a perfect South American trip.

Best time to visit Machu Picchu – April and May mark the best months to visit Machu Picchu in Peru. This is a nice period to consider, especially if you’re here only to hike the Inca Trail. The rainy season may have just passed, and the mountains turn lush green showcasing striking views. However, the ruins of Machu Picchu can be unpleasantly crowded during the peak season. It’s better to stay at Aguas Calientes, to avoid the influx of travelers flocking the site early in the day.

Weather for Machu Picchu – It often rains in Machu Picchu, and is usually a damp & foggy region to travel. July and August are the driest months, but you can still expect a few showers. January and February mark the rainiest months in this subtropical region. Try to avoid traveling during these wettest periods.

Health & Safety – For important COVID-19 guidelines & protocols, read the documentation here. Ensure that you’re fully vaccinated before your travel to Peru, and also that you consult your doctor for any medical check-ups required.

Visa & Documentation – Visa requirements will differ for each country. I’d advise you to check for documents required from your country’s embassy. You can also speak to your travel agent to understand the visa checklist.

How much does it cost – An average price for a couple to travel to Machu Picchu in Peru is around $1500-$1700. This is just an indication based on previous traveler’s data and also considering basic tour activities, travel expenses, and meals. However, if you book an organized tour from tour operators – then a 7-8 day trip can cost you $2000-$2400. All your tour expenses will depend heavily on the choices you make. Choosing the right hotel stays can also make a huge impact on the price range. Also, there are tours for Machu Picchu which is often for only a day or two – which can significantly cut down tour price.

DETAILED ITINERARY FOR MACHU PICCHU TOUR

DAY 1: LIMA

Your adventurous, fun-filled week starts from Lima – a beautiful, animated city perched on cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Lima is so much more than just being a layover stop to Machu Picchu. Travelers often don’t spend much time here, considering the itinerary they plan. But you can see some of South America’s best sights in this tiny colorful city.

Lima has evolved over the ages, and you can see pulsing restaurants and bar scenes spread across neighborhoods. You can book a half-day city tour or experience full-day Lima in the best possible way and discover amazing activities.

Here are a few of my recommendations to explore Lima –

Book a Lima City tour – Possibly, the best way to explore the surroundings of Lima is to take a city tour. Discover some of the city’s best attractions and important highlights either on a half-day or full-day tour. Make sure you venture into the important squares of Peru, and the significant avenue of Jiron de La Union. Moreover, visit the San Francisco Church, Larco Museum, and Cathedral of Lima.

Full-day excursion to Paracas and Huacachina – If you want to kick off your South American experience right away, then I recommend visiting the beach town of Paracas and the desert oasis of Huacachina. Both these amazing locations boast distinct features and are worth a full-day trip. You can do a plethora of activities such as – speed boating to the Ballestas Islands, sand-boarding the desert, and witnessing colonies of sea lions, birds, and species off the Peruvian coast. Take a cooking class – I’d recommend experiencing a guided cooking class in Lima because that’s how close you’ll get to understanding true Peruvian cuisine. If you’re a foodie, or maybe venturing into something gastronomical – then try your hands at prepping some classic Peruvian dishes with the help of your guide. Usually, these classes last three to four hours and it’s worth experiencing them. There are plenty of options to book this particular activity, however, I recommend SkyKitchen Peruvian Cooking Class.

Note: I advise booking a pre-night arrival at Lima, just so you can recover from jetlag. Often, the flight travel from various countries is hectic and can cause health problems further down the trip. It’s best to book your stay at Lima, one day before your actual itinerary.

DAY 2: LIMA – URUBAMBA

Today, you’ll visit the Sacred Valley and discover fascinating places as you discover Inca sites. The highlight of this Sacred Valley is its spectacular landscapes and panoramic viewpoints.

You will need to start early, to board your flight to Cusco. It approx. takes 1hr 30mins, after which you need to hire a private vehicle to drive down to Urubamba. You can also reach via bus, taxi or shuttle.

Here’s your schedule for day two –

Maras Salt Ponds. The striking whites of these salt ponds in contrast to the deep blue sky are something you don’t want to miss. These terraced salt pans of Maras, have been in use since the pre-Inca times.

Moray Ruins. Post your exploration of the ponds, head to Moray Ruins to visit the ancient site. You’ll surely be in awe of these great spiral terraces, descending to a central point. In the pre-Inca era, this was a place of research to conduct agricultural experiments for day-to-day survival. As you descend the terrace, you’ll also notice a shift in temperatures.

Inkariy Museum. It’s time to delve deeper into gaining some beautiful insights into the cultures that existed in Peru. The museum is vast and is divided into separate sections, each representing different eras and their importance. You can learn about Paracas, Moche, Nasca, and Inca traditions here.

Relish traditional dinner. End your day with a Peruvian traditional dish known as ‘pachamanca’. The meal involves meat and assorted vegetables cooked inside an oven dug into the earth. Other meals can also include lamb, pork, and chicken. This is truly a rustic way to experience the classic cuisine of Peru.

The schedule for your day two ends here. Furthermore, if you get some free time in the evening, you can opt to explore the Urubamba market. It’s a trendy location for tourists flocking to Machu Picchu, stopping by to buy items & souvenirs.

DAY 3: URUBAMBA

The entire day is dedicated to visiting Urubamba and the Sacred Valley region. Other than the schedule mentioned below, you can also do ample things – experiencing off-beaten guided tours & activities.

Here’s your schedule for day three –

Visit the Tata Ceramics – If the artwork inspires you, then Tata Ceramics in Urubamba will surely fascinate you with its high-end glazed ceramics. Originally created by internationally acclaimed Cusco artist, the collections stored in the shop is made with intricate design and ancient technique. All the items created here, ranging from bowls, decorative plates, and cups, to smaller & larger figurines can be found. They recently have opened up a new store, from where you can buy unique, hand-crafted souvenirs to take home.

Pisac Ruins – The town of Pisac is an hour’s drive from Urubamba. This serene village is famous for travelers seeking traditional rural life experiences of Peru. Amongst all the other things in the village, Pisac ruins are a must-visit. The ruins of Pisac serve as a perfect example of ingenious Inca architecture and local traditions. It’s also one of Peru’s most extensive archaeological sites, that makes you venture into its deep Peruvian roots. Pisac ruins not only proudly boast its tradition but also its gorgeous setting, charming scenery, and plunging gorges – that it’s worth admiring every second you spend.

You can take a guided tour to these ruins, exploring Pisac’s sweeping green valleys and mountain peaks. There’s also the National Archaeological Park of Pisac, which includes several aqueducts, water channels, small bridges, and cemeteries. The site is also well-known for its vast terraces and polished stone structures, surrounded by amazing viewpoints.

Ollantaytambo Ruins – Take a guided tour of Ollantaytambo ruins and discover fascinating history to know more about this Inca archaeological site. If you’re wondering, the site is the same as the Pisac ruins – then it’s not.  Ollantaytambo still boasts agricultural terraces, fountains, irrigation canals, and a Temple Hill. Along with your exploration, get inspired by how Ollantaytambo served as a stronghold during warfare.

DAY 4: URUBAMBA – AGUAS CALIENTES

Today, checkout from your hotel and depart for Aguas Calientes. You’ll need to board a train from Ollantaytambo station. It will approx. take you 1hr 30mins to reach your destination.

Once you settle down in your hotel at Aguas Calientes, the rest of the day is free for leisure activities. You can also take optional guided tours to Butterfly House and Mandor Gardens in the afternoon.

In the evening, I highly recommend relaxing at local hot water springs. It’s absolutely the best way to recoup your energy for the following day, and also to rejuvenate and nourish your senses.

Aguas Calientes is a very small town, and you’ll only find buses taking daily trips to Machu Picchu. So you’ll have to go walking to reach Machu Picchu Pueblo Hot Springs. It’s a 15-minute walk from the main town square, and you’ll get your directions quite easily. Alternatively, you can also soak yourselves at Cocalmayo Hot Springs. Honestly, the latter one is more scenic – because you can enjoy some great mountain views whilst you take a hot bath.

DAY 5: AGUAS CALIENTES – CUSCO

Today, you’ll be finally taking a tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Site – Machu Picchu in Peru. The best way to maximize your time is to leave early from your hotel.

Here’s how you can spend your day at Machu Picchu –

Catch early sunrise – One of the reasons why you need to leave early in the morning, is to catch scenic views of the mountain during sunrise. Often, you’ll find tourists jammed up at certain viewpoints to take snaps of the views, but if you’re reaching early – you might be lucky enough to find isolated spots.

Temple of the Sun – One of the landmarks that represent Inca history is by visiting the Temple of the Sun. In the early days of the pre-Inca period, the site was used for astronomical observations.

Spot the Intihuatana – As you explore the Inca site, you’ll also be interested in spotting Intihuatana. These are carved stones holding religious importance by the Inca.

The Temple of the Condor & Prison Group – These are some interesting locations on the east side of Machu Picchu that are worth your visit. You’ll find blocks of the cell above and below the ground, often referred to as the ‘Prison Group’. Also, here you can visit the Temple of the Condor which is known to resemble the head of a giant bird.

Explore the Agricultural Terraces – Machu Picchu’s true essence comes from its agricultural terraces that descend the slope. It’s hard to imagine how the Incas managed to cultivate crops based on the mountainous terrain of the Andes. Explore the site, as much as you can, and learn more about its history and development from the locals.

These are generally the most important landmarks of Machu Picchu in Peru. However, if you don’t prefer to travel by yourself – there are guided tours for Machu Picchu that will help you throughout your excursion to manage your schedule. Moreover, this is not the only way to discover the best of Machu Picchu. You can even take the famous Inca Trails, which range from four to eight days of pure bliss. These trails often take you up to the top of the mountain, which gives commanding views of Huayna Picchu.

DAY 6: CUSCO

Cusco is a charming city, buzzing with tourist activity year-round. The city is loaded with attractions & activities to explore, thus you’ll have an entire day to enjoy Cusco.

Here’s how I recommend spending a day at Cusco –

City Tour – Quickest way to discover the best sights of Cusco, is to hop on a tour bus and traverse across different neighborhoods. Visit the famous Plaza De Armas, Qorikancha, Quenqo, and the archaeological site of Sacsayhuaman. You can also hang out by taking a walking tour of the town and venturing into some bars and shop en route.

Horseback Riding – If you have never tried horseback riding, then this is your chance to soak in some adventure. Exploring the cultural sites of Cusco by horseback is an interesting way to discover important landmarks. Usually, these horseback tours last 3 hours, but there are other packages as well. Check this tour operator to find classic horseback trails and niche experiences.

Visit the Cusco Planetarium – One of the different ways to explore Cusco is to visit the planetarium for a family fun-filled hour. The Cusco Planetarium is surrounded by the lush green forests of Llaullipata Ecological Reserve. Explore a detailed presentation of the planets & galaxies, learn & get inspired through various astronomical studies, and use the telescope to witness the dancing cosmos of the sky.

Biking tour of Barranco and Miraflores – Certainly, if you have the energy to discover more of Peru’s hidden treasures – then take a biking tour of Barranco and Miraflores. Soak in stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, and discover a bohemian neighborhood as you journey through the Peruvian coast. The tour will usually last for 3 hours, and an approx. cost you $30.

Downtown and Catacombs Night Tour – Hop on a private tour to explore the illuminated Cathedral of Lima. Further, stroll across the main square and visit the San Francisco Convent and its famous catacombs. The tour will approx. cost you $60.

DAY 8: LIMA

While Lima’s modern, urban ambience is captivating in its own right, heading into the jungles of the Amazon provides an entirely distinct experience. As you arrive in Tambopata, the hot and muggy air envelops you, signalling the start of a dramatic landscape transformation. Soon, you’ll find yourself in the lush lowland regions of the Amazon jungle, where the natural world takes centre stage.

You have the rest of your day on your own. Make sure you explore some of the surroundings of the Tambopata region, either by taking optional excursions or through self-discovery.

Day 3: Tambopata

Exploration at the Tambopata and Amazon.

Today, you will journey to the Peruvian Amazon basin i.e. Tambopata National Reserve. A full-day excursion to Lake Sandoval is planned so that you feel the true Amazonian experience in Peru.

The expedition to Lake Sandoval includes a brief boat ride, a guided trek through the densely forested rainforest, and a canoe journey. Before I get to the itinerary part, it’s important to understand a few essential planning tips before you plan your Iguazu Falls trip.

Best time to visit Brazil & Argentina: Generally, the best time to visit both Brazil & Argentina is March to May. People often choose the holiday season (December) to visit these countries, but the temperature is too hot. If you want to avoid crowds, September to October is an ideal time too. To experience Rio Carnival in Brazil, plan your trip in the month of April. The carnival will start on 20th April 2022 and will end on 30th April 2022.

Health & Safety: Both countries are safe to visit. Crime rates have reduced and it’s often the safest of all compared to other Latin & Central Americas regions. For COVID-19 restrictions and guidelines, visit this resource section.

Visa & Documentation: Visa requirements will differ from country to country. But, all countries will require a valid passport (6 months of minimum validity) to enter both countries. Citizens of the U.S won’t require a visa to enter Brazil & Argentina. A valid U.S passport will be the only requirement.

DAY 2: BUENOS AIRES – IGUAZÚ FALLS

The Iguazu Falls itinerary is designed to give you two full days of exploration from both the Argentine and Brazilian sides. For today, we will be hopping onto the Brazilian corner to spectate Iguazú Falls.

Before we get to the guided tour of Iguazú Falls, let’s give you a closer look at the amazing features Iguazú boasts. This dramatic waterfall is 2,700m in width, between the height of 60m and 82m. A large proportion of Iguazú Falls (around 80%) falls on the Argentinian side. Even between the borders of Brazil and Argentine, the Iguazú Falls features close to 275 waterfalls in total, with different volumes of water flowing throughout.

DAY 3: IGUAZÚ FALLS

Return back to Argentina to explore the Iguazú Falls.

It’s been a constant debate amongst travel specialists, as to which country provides the best experience to view Iguazú Falls. While the Brazilian side is known for stunning panorama scenes, the Argentinian side is known for scenic trails and amazing vantage points.

Exploring Iguazú Falls from the Argentine side gives you a closer look at the cascading waterfalls in a much more interesting way. There are two circuits – an upper path and a lower path. The upper path has a boardwalk trail leading you to panoramic vistas and dizzying views of the falls. While the lower path leads you to the lower main base of the falls. I would recommend visiting both the circuits for an unforgettable trip.

There are different trails in the region, which you can explore along with the two circuits. You can also take a boat trip to feel the Iguazú Falls.

Iguazú Falls Helicopter Flight – This optional helicopter tour takes you on an aerial journey to give you a bird’s eye view of Iguazú Falls. Visit the Historic Centre – There’s no way that you can miss visiting the Historic Centre when in Paraty. This is truly the heart of the city, which is on every traveler’s list to visit. The shops, the mansions, the old classic look of restaurants and bars – all give you a unique fancy colonial look displaying Portuguese character at its best. Considering Christmas in December and Easter in March/April – the influx of tourists may be at its peak. Flight tickets & hotel rates will be on the expensive side, but if booked in advance, then you’ll save some money. Alternatively, you can also plan your Colombia itinerary from March to September. You can expect rainfall constantly, but it won’t be a tickling issue.

Go on a walking tour – The best advice I could give you to explore Bogota – is to take a free walking tour. If you want to have a short visit to Cocora, you can visit only the central valley of Wax Palms, and it will take you about half an hour. However, for those who wish to enjoy the actual hike, take the classic five-hour trail leading through the Cocora Valley.

Later, enjoy exploring the town of Salento.

Day 5: Salento – Medellin

Today, drive through the beautiful scenic route of Colombia’s landscapes to reach Medellin.

The journey to Medellin is quite hectic, as it can take anywhere between 6-7 hours to reach. Hence, considering the traveling part, no activities are planned.

Best time to visit Costa Rica

If you’re wondering when is the best time to spend 7 days in Costa Rica, then it’s the holiday season (December).

However, it’s worth noting that this period attracts a substantial influx of tourists eager to partake in the festivities. As Christmas approaches and New Year’s celebrations loom, travellers often plan well in advance to ensure a hassle-free visit. An alternative approach could be to schedule your trip two weeks after the holiday season, still allowing you to relish Costa Rica’s wonders without the bustling crowds.

Additionally, the months of July and August present another popular window of opportunity. Although these months bring rain and slightly cooler weather, they offer an ideal climate for experiencing many of Costa Rica’s attractions.

Day 1: San José

San José serves as your entry point to this Costa Rican adventure you’re about to embark on. As the capital city, it boasts a rich tapestry of cultural experiences. While it may be densely populated, San José exudes a welcoming atmosphere, drawing in friendly tourists from around the world.

The city comes alive at night with vibrant nightlife scenes and the opportunity to savor delicious local cuisine. Furthermore, its historical landmarks and exquisite architecture contribute to a sense of discovery as you explore its streets.

Here are a few places that I recommend you opt for when you’re spending your day in the capital city –

Visit the National Center of Art & Culture

This sprawling museum houses modern contemporary art, dance, and theatre. It’s one of the most important sites in San José, attracting millions of tourists. Within its walls, you’ll encounter a diverse array of galleries proudly displaying authentic Costa Rican artworks. To gain access to this cultural treasure trove, you can expect an entry fee of 1,850 CRC per person.

San Gerardo de Dota

For a tranquil and peaceful experience, consider venturing to San Gerardo de Dota, an idyllic destination for bird-watching enthusiasts. Nestled amidst the serene rolling hills of the Cordillera de Talamanca, the backdrop itself is a sight to behold.

There’s nothing quite like observing wild bird species in this serene and unspoiled environment. Interestingly, San Gerardo de Dota remains a hidden gem, relatively untouched by mass tourism, ensuring you’ll encounter fewer crowds during your visit.

Day 2: San José – Monteverde

Duration: 2hr 18mins (141kms)

Monteverde is a verdant paradise, renowned for its commitment to eco-tourism and extraordinary biodiversity. Countless tourists flock to Monteverde to partake in bird-watching excursions and to marvel at its cloud forests. I have seriously cherished my time in this remarkable town, and it owes much of its charm to the lush greenery that envelops you from the moment you arrive.

Upon your checkout, drive past winding roads to reach Monteverde. The journey is quite scenic and you can stop over to click ample photos. It roughly takes 2 hours to reach, meaning you almost have an entire day to yourself to try some interesting activities.

Cloud Forest Reserve in Monteverde

Undoubtedly, one of the best destinations in Monteverde is the Cloud Forest Reserve. A visit here allows you to rekindle your connection with nature in the most serene manner. The entire reserve is adorned with magnificent orchid collections, the potential to spot elusive jungle cats, and encounters with unique wildlife species.
Operational timings – Sunday to Saturday (7 am – 4 pm)
Entry Fee – $25 for adults, $12 for children, and an additional $5 for parking.

Experience a canopy tour

If you haven’t already experienced a canopy tour in San Jose, then Monteverde offers an unmissable opportunity for this activity. Whether you choose a treetop canopy tour or decide to traverse a network of suspension bridges through the forest, you’ll have the chance to get up close and personal with the abundant natural world. Keep your eyes peeled for toucans and exotic orchids as you embark on this adrenaline-filled adventure.

Note: Booking a canopy tour can vary from company to company. Some offer clubbed packages, whilst others as a single service. Expect the price to be around $40 – $80 for suspension bridge tours & zip lining.

Monteverde Horseback Riding

Also if you haven’t experienced horseback riding before, I highly encourage you to give it a try, especially in the morning setting of misty Monteverde. These horseback riding trips typically span from 2.5 hours to 6 hours, guiding you along private mountain trails where you can encounter Costa Rican wildlife in its natural habitat.

As you journey, keep your eyes peeled for the likes of toucans, bellbirds, parrots, and other fascinating species. To book this activity, I recommend going through Horse Trek Monteverde, with prices ranging between $45 and $50 depending on the package you select.

Night tour of the rainforest

Exploring the rainforest at night offers a fascinating opportunity to encounter numerous nocturnal creatures. With every step, you can anticipate thrilling surprises and intriguing encounters throughout your nighttime exploration. From tarantulas to armadillos and large insects, these creatures might cross your path as you delve into the rainforest’s mysteries.

Along with the above-mentioned activities, you can also add the Monteverde Butterfly Garden, El Trapiche, and Santa Elena Cloud Forest tours to your list. It’s not possible to try out everything in a single day, but you can span out some of these experiences for day three.

Day 3: Monteverde

Day three in Monteverde is free to relax or try out other listed activities. Since, there’s so much to explore – keeping an extra day at this beautiful location does make sense!

My top recommendation for the day would be to go on a coffee tour in Monteverde.

This experience allows you to deepen your understanding of the sustainable coffee farming process. You’ll gain insights into the locals’ meticulous methods for preparing coffee beans, witness the intricacies of seed germination, and even get hands-on by assisting in the preparation process. As you delve into the world of coffee, you’ll also have the opportunity to interact with the locals, who can provide you with invaluable insider tips for uncovering hidden gems and secret getaways in the region.

In the end, head to the Coffee Lab to taste some of the finest samples of coffee. Even if you aren’t a coffee drinker, it’s worth sipping to relish the rich Costa Rican flavours. Alternatively, you can relax for the rest of the day or visit Monteverde Butterfly Garden and El Trapiche.

Day 4: Monteverde – La Fortuna

Duration: 3 hours (121 km)

Today, your journey takes you from Monteverde to the adrenaline capital of Costa Rica, La Fortuna. Situated in the San Carlos region, this charming city is framed by the stunning backdrop of the Arenal Volcano. Travelers who frequent this part of Costa Rica are consistently mesmerized by the picturesque vistas provided by these majestic mountains.

Upon your arrival, you have free time to relax and explore the surroundings. In the evening, I recommend experiencing the local hot springs of La Fortuna. Well, there’s plenty of them spread across the entire city. However, not all are budget-friendly.

My ideal suggestion would be to visit the Baldi Hot Springs Hotel & Spa. They have around 25 thermal pools around the property, surrounded by lush vegetation & clean amenities. You don’t necessarily need to book a room to access the hot springs. You can directly head to the designated area and pay an entrance fee of $40 for the hot springs.

Day 5: La Fortuna

Today, you will explore La Fortuna to its core. This day is packed with adventurous fun that will surely pump your adrenaline to experience Costa Rica’s wild side.

Get ready to soak in this water-based adventure activity, as you rush through the gushing waters in the rainforest. As you rappel down the waters, be excited to witness exotic birds and wildlife. It’s a thrilling way to immerse yourself in this adrenaline-fueled sport, and I strongly recommend not missing out on it.

Arenal Volcano Walk and Hike

One of the best things you could do in La Fortuna is to take a guided walking tour of Arenal Volcano. The trail is not physically demanding and can be comfortably navigated with the assistance of knowledgeable nature guides.

The renowned 1968 trail, in particular, offers abundant opportunities to capture breathtaking views of the volcano from various angles. In addition to exploring the volcano, you can also discover other notable attractions such as Lake Arenal and Cerro Chato, an extinct volcano.

La Fortuna Waterfall

Just across the Arenal Volcano, you’ll find a more serene natural spot – La Fortuna Waterfalls. Here, you can unwind, revitalize, or take a refreshing dip in the cool waters. Beyond the attractions already mentioned, there’s still more to discover in La Fortuna.

There are two international airports from where you can arrive in Costa Rica. One, being the major i.e. San Jose International Airport, and the other, Roberts International Airport. The former one is rather the busiest, with long immigration lines and security check-in.
