As mentioned before, both states have their own peculiarity, and it’s best to explore them individually.

Best Route to Reach Byron Bay from Sydney
There are two main routes to reach Byron Bay from Sydney. The most popular one, which visitors often prefer, is the Pacific Highway Coastal route. The other is an inland route that passes through Hunter Valley, Armidale, Grafton and New England National Park.
Now, considering which route to take is purely based on your preference. However, I’ll still help you decide what’s best for you. The way via Pacific Highway is the most direct one, which takes lesser time to reach Byron Bay. This coastal stretch is also packed with numerous fantastic viewpoints, attractions, and beaches. So, if you’re interested in exploring the pristine expanses of NSW, consider taking the Pacific Highway route.
Alternatively, the route via New England Highway considerably takes more time to reach Byron Bay and is less scenic than the Pacific Highway. However, it still boasts amazing destinations that are worth checking out. The roads get quieter as it passes through the rural landscape and wineries. So, if you prefer this version of your road trip, consider taking the New England Highway.

The drive from Sydney to Byron Bay is a total of 766 km. If you were to drive non-stop, it would take approximately 8hr 6mins to reach via the Pacific Highway. However, we don’t recommend a direct journey, as it’s best to throw in stops throughout your entire road trip. Plan your drive from Sydney to Byron Bay for approximately five to six days to span out travel. These are the minimum days required to get the most out of this trip.

Newcastle doesn’t go big with its attractions, but it still manages to lure tourists with its beautiful beaches and waterfront harbour. The laidback lifestyle of this city makes it worthwhile for visitors who prefer lesser crowds and the least populated spaces. However, even with its pretty slow pace – Newcastle is a definite place on any NSW travel itinerary. While the national park is popular for many family-friendly activities, specific trails could be more attractive. Few of these walking tracks are made for beginners, while some are for those who love adventure. Here’s my recommendation for some of the best trails in Hunter Wetlands National Park:
The Welcome Walk
Perfect for beginners, this 1.4km takes you around in a loop across the Hunter Wetlands National Park. On average, it takes 17-20 minutes to complete. The trail is quite famous for bird-watching, so make sure that you keep your binoculars ready.
Scotts Point Way to Riverside Park
This 7.7km loop trail is a slightly moderate trail that leads you to unique spots within the national park. The course is relatively quieter in the early mornings so that you can expect fewer crowds. Please note that dogs aren’t allowed on this trail.
Cobbans Track
If you love a challenge, try exploring this 12.1km loop trail. The track is perfect for mountain bike adventurers and can be a great way to explore the national park’s rugged terrain.
Visit Nelson Bay
Located on the tip of the southern coastline, Nelson Bay is one of the must-visit destinations of New South Wales. It’s also one of the most preferred road trips stops, as you can choose from plenty of accommodation options.

However, it’s not just the aquatic experience that takes your breath away, but also the marine life that adds more to the thrill. As you venture underwater, spot species like colossal sea hares, Port Jackson sharks, Wobbegong sharks and dolphins.

Relax at Coffs Harbour
Coffs Harbour is one of NSW’s most popular beach holiday destinations. Visitors from different parts of the world often treat Coffs Harbour as their travel base to explore other Australian regions. One reason being – the accommodation – which is in abundance and reasonable price. The other is – the giant yellow banana. Yes, you that right!” The big banana” has become a visual stop-point for any tourist bypassing the coastal route. It’s believed that your trip to NSW is genuinely incomplete without visiting the stop.
I’ll suggest you explore Coffs Harbour on your own. Big Banana Fun Park and Treetop Coffs Harbour are the main attractions here. So, if you’ve got the energy to hit them, then the fun is all yours! Otherwise, unwind, relax and soak in the charming town vibes of Coffs Harbour.
Discover the surf town of Yamba
Yamba has gorgeous beaches, ancient emu trails, and lip-smacking seafood restaurants. It’s been on everyone’s bucket list since its flourishment with overall tourist experiences. If you look at Yamba as a town, it’s pretty similar to other NSW coastal towns; however, it still appeals to visitors with a punchy range of bustling activities. One thing you should definitely do in Yamba is to stay in cosy beach-side apartments. The range of options you get with various budget brackets is just astonishing.
