For me, it’s more about the vibe. I feel connected to the local culture, the roots of the neighborhoods, and the fascinating tales that have inspired its generations. It’s more about getting to know these towns rather than just making a tour and coming back home. And that’s when I thought these two famous Australian cities t have a friendly barefoot lifestyle. You’ll only get to know it if you visit them!

But yes, apart from the vibes, it’s about the experience. Ultimately, you’re planning an itinerary to visit popular places within these two coastal towns. The drive from Byron Bay to Gold Coast is 92kms via the M1 route and should have a drive time of approximately 1hr 22mins. However, expect up to 2 hours of drive during heavy traffic. The alternative route to reach Gold Coast is via Tweed Valley Way, which is 98.3kms. It’s not the fastest route, as you go through the inland region of Queensland and NSW.

The best part about visiting these cities is that both are year-round destinations. Offering bright sunshine and warm temperatures, these coastal towns are a perfect place to go around any time of the year. However, the best time to visit Byron Bay and Gold Coast is May and October. You can expect temperatures averaging between 14 – 24°C. The days are warmer, and the nights are more relaxed, making activities like swimming, kayaking, and surfing perfect for enjoying.

Choosing the right vehicle for your road trip is as important as planning your entire journey. Day 1: Surf, Beaches & Cape Byron Lighthouse

Arrive in Byron Bay

Your first day in Byron Bay is basically an introduction to the city’s local attractions and popular activities. This way you get to know the city much closer and can discover unique things by yourself.

From patrolled and dog-friendly beaches to isolated coves near the town, Byron Bay houses a 30km stretch of beaches. With warm, turquoise blue waters, Byron Bay is one of the best places in Australia to swim and surf. Having said that, you can never get enough of exploring the beaches in Byron. I had seen people traveling from far away places just to soak in the surfing adventure of this town.

As popular swimming and surfing are in Byron Bay, the beaches also offer excellent walking tracks and lookout areas for people to stroll & enjoy the views. Of course, not necessarily everyone knows surfing, and this way, you get good alternatives to explore the beaches at your own pace and at leisure. What’s more, is that you could see humpback whales migrating near the ocean during the months of June and October. Day trips take you on tour to see these natural habitats in action.

While numerous beaches are spread across Byron Bay, we recommend visiting the famous ones first. These include Main Beach, Little Wategos Beach, Tallow Beach, and Clarkes Beach. Many of these beaches have great coffee shops and little restaurants.

Apart from the beaches, there’s a lot to see and do in Byron Bay, especially in the World Heritage-listed rainforests of the Byron Bay Hinterland.

The hinterland region in Byron bay is well-known for its historic villages, lush-green farms, rolling hills, and panoramic lookouts. The contrast of these rainforests offers great tranquillity to travellers visiting the region for the first time. Moreover, the hinterland is a perfect place to wash the urban stress of busy city life.

As much as we want you to explore the inland region of Byron by yourself, we also recommend taking a guided tour of the hinterland. Let’s prepare for an exciting day as we prepare ourselves to hop on a cruise to Moreton Island.

Fringed by clear blue waters, dunes, and sparkly beaches – Moreton Island is the third-largest sand dune located near Brisbane. Although the ferry from Gold Coast to Moreton Island is a bit far, approximately 2hr 30mins, it’s still worth your time exploring this paradisical island.

If you book a guided tour to Moreton Island, then you’ll travel on a bus to your nearest boat departure. Most boats depart to Moreton have an outdoor seating area and a spacious seating deck to sit and relax. As you start sailing, do not forget to marvel at the aquatic species harboring the sea. Go snorkeling or swimming at one of the stops, and discover the rich marine world of Australia. You can spot turtles, dolphins, fish, and many other shipwrecks abandoned near the beach.

Before reaching the island, you also have the option to try a glass-bottom kayak. It’s a thrilling experience to witness the magical underworld of Tangalooma Wrecks. Well, it’s not entirely true, but it definitely lives up to the expectation that most travelers often dream of. On the other hand, Surfers Paradise isn’t only a popular surfing spot and home to many activities and local experiences. Honestly, you could spend two or three days here and not get bored!

5 Scenic McLaren Vale Walking Trails

Willunga Basin Trail

Willunga Basin Trail is one of the fantastic walking trails of McLaren Vale. This 130km ultimate stretch winds through a varietal landscape the Fleurieu Peninsula boasts. From the greens of bushland and forests to the colours of vineyards and almond parks, Willunga Basil Trail is a must-visit stretch in this region.

Since the path is long, you can complete the trail either in 5 days or 11 days. This entirely depends on your fitness levels, as you need a moderate physique to walk this trail. However, if you prefer to do only a specific portion, then it’s best recommended to walk from Maslin Beach to McLaren Vale, covering Seaford and Willunga in between. You can cover this tiny portion within 4-5 hours.

McLaren Vale Cellar Door Tree Trail

McLaren Vale is not only about wineries and culinary tales but also about the sustainability and conservation of the trees surrounding the region. To educate more on this to tourists, a partnership was formed between McLaren Vale and Willunga Environment Centre to create an interesting trail called McLaren Vale Cellar Door Tree Trail. The pathway connects 14 wine cellar doors, along with 54 tagged trees.

These tagged forests mention the tree’s age, height, and unique characteristics. This makes it interesting for travellers to learn more about the forest’s diversity harbouring in the McLaren region. Also, the cellar doors you visit during this trail are worth stopping by. Some of these include Paxton Wines, Chalk Hill Wines, Samson Tall Wines, and Gemtree Wines.

Flat to McLaren Vale Trail

Flat to McLaren is best suited for families travelling with kids, youth, and senior citizens. It’s a friendly-walkable trail connecting McLaren Flat and McLaren Vale, and it’s a newly constructed track, which now sees a frequent hustle of tourists from all over Australia.

Stretching up to 3.6kms in length, the entire path of Flat to McLaren Vale is flat, connecting different townships based between McLaren Flat and Vale. It also connects the Coast to Vines Trail, including the famous path Shiraz Trail. This makes it super convenient for runners and cyclists to explore other routes within the McLaren Vale wine region.

Shiraz Trail

Shiraz Trail is the best walking trail in the entire McLaren region. Being one of the most well-known paths, Shiraz Trail runs from McLaren to Willunga via an 8km track. The trail is best suited for walking and cycling both. Interestingly, the track was previously used as a rail corridor. However, considering its locality, the stretch got constructed into a beautiful path today.

Shiraz Trail is a relatively flat-surfaced and easy-to-walk. Since it is best suited for all age groups, the path can get crowded with tourists during Australia’s summer and autumn seasons. However, baring the crowd scene, the Shiraz is one of the best to provide scenic vineyard views of the entire McLaren Vale. During your exploration, you’ll come across many wine cellar doors which are worth visiting. Some of these include Serafino Wines, Battle of Bosworth, and Hardys Wines.

If you’re cycling the path on an early Saturday morning, then don’t forget to hit the famous Willunga Farmers Market. You can shop local produce, artisan food, and varietals of cheeses, meats and breads here.

Ocean to Vines Rail Trail

Ocean to Vines is one of the best McLaren Vale walking trails if you prefer to see a range of diverse attractions. Winding alongside the coastal beauty of Marino, the trail stretches up to 38kms in length, traversing between coastal suburbs and towns. It’s interesting to see how the landscape changes throughout the trail as you venture more and more inner sections of McLaren.

Ocean to Vines Rail Trail starts at Marina and ends in Willunga. It’s a shared path that both cyclists and walkers can access. As you begin your journey, you’ll hut some of the Fleurieu Peninsula’s best coastal quaint such as Hallett Cove, Morphett Vale, Seaford Rise and Hackham.

The Shiraz Trail is a shorter section of the Ocean to Vines Rail Trail. So, it makes sense to take the latter one to explore more attractions and activities along your way. Furthermore, it also connects other trails such as Christies Creek Trail and Field River Trail.

To reach either of the destinations, you can take the Newell Highway (inland route) or the Pacific Highway (coastal route). Not many visitors often take the inland route, as its less scenic. Even, for our Melbourne to Gold Coast road trip itinerary, we will be exploring the places via the Pacific Coast. On this route, you’ll find much more places to visit, including Sydney and Canberra.

Just under five hours from Melbourne and Sydney, Wagga Wagga is one of the best places to visit on our Melbourne to Gold Coast road trip. Usually, when we think of Australian cities – we often imagine the beauty of its coastal towns and beaches. However, the country’s inland doesn’t go around disappointing you in terms of its tourism opportunities. And there’s no better destination than Wagga Wagga to spend some time relaxing, unwinding, and soaking in the town’s charming atmosphere.

Wagga Wagga is fringed by jagged mountains, rolling hills, and the beautiful Murrumbidgee River. Being one of the cultural towns of Australia, Wagga Wagga proudly boasts its serene countryside scenes, incredible diversity, pretty gardens, hiking trails, and excellent food & wine culture. For a moment, the city feels too good to be true. But, when you visit, you literally sense the energetic vibes of the city’s bustling environment.

What makes Wagga Wagga a perfect weekend destination is its central location. Many day-trippers often take a backpacking tour to this lively town to spend a relaxing holiday. Even if you give two full days, you’ll be sure of experiencing the absolute best of Wagga Wagga.

Take a leisurely stroll at Wollundry Lagoon

Located right in the city center, Wollundry Lagoon is one of the best places to take a stroll and picnic. This relaxing lagoon makes an ideal spot for you to seek the tranquility of the place. During specific seasons, many events and cultural shows take place for tourists to engage and explore.

Explore Native Wildlife at Livingstone National Park

There’s nothing more interesting than exploring a national park close to the city. A 40-minute drive from the city center takes you to one of Australia’s most friendly natural settings of, Livingstone National Park. Based inside the Wiradjuri Country, the entire park is vital to the Aboriginal community. If you allow yourselves a day trip, expect to see and do plenty of things. These include picnicking, horse riding, bush-walking, and bird-watching. Oh, and expect to spot wallabies and kangaroos during your hike.

Wagga Wagga Botanical Gardens

Filled with gorgeous parks and botanic gardens, the Wagga Wagga Botanical Gardens is surely the perfect place to unwind. The entire area beautifully brims with plants and trees, surrounded by different gardens such as native flora, camellia, and bamboo.

Canberra

Canberra needs no introduction when it comes to exploring the city. Being the capital city of Australia, the place mesmerizes me with its history and rich culture. It’s a place that doesn’t really house many natural attractions but feels good to see such institutional places of high importance.

As you dig deeper into your exploration, you’ll find Canberra bustling with museums, historical sites, hidden gems, and family-friendly attractions. I visited Canberra multiple times, and honestly, I never really got bored of visiting such cultural places. Well, if you’re a history buff, you’d love Canberra! For non-history lovers, you could try it, and maybe there’s something around the corner that might interest you.

From my point of view, Canberra isn’t a glamourous city like Melbourne & Sydney are. If you expect that, then probably you’d be disappointed. But, I think the capital city balances out the hipness that other cities proudly boast. If you really admire the local Aboriginal community and its stories, you’d fall in love with the tales Canberra has to portray. From guided city tours to local museum exploration, plenty of experiential activities help you understand Australia’s past timelines. Give it a go, and you’d find it much more interesting.

For starters, let’s look at the top things to do in Canberra city –

Visit the National Gallery of Australia (NGA)

Let’s say you have time to visit only one place in Canberra, then try making the National Gallery of Australia (NGA) your highest priority. The gallery is known to house many collections of indigenous art and precious artifacts that display the rich history of Australia. Some must-see works include Sidney Nolan’s Ned Kelly paintings and artwork done by Warhol, Monet, and Albert Namatjira. On many occasions, the gallery lightens up with exhibition events and shows, and this makes it interesting for families and kids to learn Australia’s diverse story.

Australian War Memorial

The Australian War Memorial in Canberra is one of the country’s most prestigious sites. Dedicated to the war fatalities, this memorial site was inaugurated during WWII. Today, the place features a vast museum, library, and art gallery for tourists to explore. One interesting thing about the war memorial is that the exhibits constantly evolve, depicting varied Australian themes. Especially for kids, these exhibits make it more interactive for them to learn and engage. The Discovery Zone section is too packed with many exciting displays and stories. The other interesting fact is that your entry fee to this memorial is free.

Take a Leisure Walk Around Lake Burley Griffin

Lake Burley Griffin is another prime attraction of Canberra. Many tourists and locals bike around the waterfront paths, picnic in the lush-green parks, fish, paddle, and cruise on this beautiful lake. What makes this place a popular attraction is its proximity to other Canberra landmarks, and places like National Library, National Museum, and National Gallery are nearby.

Recommended: If you’re spending one or two days in Canberra, consider visiting Questacon, the National Portrait Gallery of Australia, Mount Ainslie Lookout, and the Australian National Botanic Gardens. The best idea to tour these attractions is to book a full-day guided tour.

Sydney

As you journey towards Sydney, you’ll soon find a plethora of things to see and do. Honestly, the entire stretch of the Canberra to Sydney route is filled with amazing landscape, quaint inland towns, and local cafes & restaurants. The closer you get to Sydney, you’ll be overwhelmed with things to explore & experience.

For me, Sydney is one of the best places to stop during the Melbourne to Gold Coast road trip. It’s an adventure in itself to explore major Australian landmarks, iconic beaches, acclaimed wine regions, award-wining restaurants, rooftop bars, and energetic nightlife scenes. No matter your preference or how you visit them – you can sense the Australian flair to everything you do in Sydney.

And while you’re here, I highly recommend spending a minimum of 2 days exploring the city. This way, you won’t miss out on experiencing some of the fine things. On the other hand, if you want to hurry up your drive towards Gold Coast, then make it a point to at least visit the below-suggested places.

Bondi to Coogee Walk

One of the best things to do in Sydney is to walk along the extensive coastline of Bondi to Coogee. I honestly cannot describe in words how beautiful the views are! As you traverse the path, you will face some of the city’s shining sandy beaches. During the peak season, especially on weekends, the Bondi to Coogee can get overcrowded. As an alternative, I suggest taking the Split-to-Manly walk.

Enjoy nightlife scenes at King’s Cross

A visit to Sydney is incomplete without attending its spirited nightlife. Suppose you want to party hard and get inexpensive beer, head to King’s Cross. This is where you meet tourists from all over the world as they come to experience Sydney’s most lively scenes. My personal favorite is the World Bar at King’s Cross. For a toned-down version, head to The Rocks or Manly.

Attend the Markets

One of the best things to do in Sydney is exploring its varied markets. Depending on your travel season, different markets will have seasonal products to sell. Plus, it’s really easy to wander off these markets on your own, to explore and purchase your favorite items. Some of my recommendations include Paddington Markets, Bondi Farmers Market, and Glebe Market. If you’re a fan of antiques, then I suggest taking a visit to Rozelle Collectors Market.

Explore the Hunter Valley

To not visit Australia’s most acclaimed wine region would be a sin. The Hunter Valley in Sydney is one of the best places to tour amazing wineries. From cherishing its local wines to hogging local delicious food, you could go all-out in the region’s abundant activities. There are day tours to Hunter Valley from Sydney and can get pretty much affordable if you club with other tours.

Note: If you’re exploring the Hunter Valley on this road trip, then I suggest booking a hotel somewhere near Newcastle or Cessnock. Moreover, it’s best to spend overnight to get the full experience of this amazing place.

Palm Beach

I specifically included Palm Beach on our road trip stops because I absolutely loved the place. Initially, it wasn’t on my list to explore, but considering last-minute changes, I needed something off-beat to escape Sydney’s bustling routine. Palm Beach, or ‘Palmy’ commonly called by locals, is one of Sydney’s most northern beaches. Located at the end of a peninsula, the beach has been a favorite home-stay point for wealthy business people and celebrities.

When you’re here, do not forget to visit the peninsula’s famous points – Palm Beach, Mona Vale Beach, Bigola Beach, and Whale Beach. Of course, if you’re short on time, you wouldn’t get to visit all its beaches. But consider exploring Mona Vale Beach first. For the past few years, this spot has become an Instagram sensation. It features a rock pool overlooking jaw-dropping views of the ocean.

Next on your list should be the famous Barrenjoey Lighthouse. From far-away scenes, the hike looks a bit strenuous to complete; however, it’s only a 15-minute uphill walk from your car park. Given that you provide at least 2 hours for this stretch, you’d be in a treat to soak in panoramic coastal views of the ocean.

Port Macquarie

Located 394kms from Sydney, Port Macquarie is one of NSW’s best year-round destinations. Port Macquarie was my favorite place to stop during the Melbourne to Gold Coast drive, hosting multiple wineries, amazing waterfront areas, and a generous collection of award-winning restaurants.

This charming seaside town has been a long-time favored destination to escape city life. Cometh any season, and you’ll find locals and tourists traversing from different parts of the world to enjoy what Port Macquarie offers. From secluded beaches and harbor towns to national parks and rainforests, this NSW town has just got the right Australian laidback vibes.

I would highly recommend spending an overnight stay at Port Macquarie. To know what things to do here, check out my top suggestions below –

Explore Port Macquarie’s wineries

Visiting wineries in Port Macquarie must be on your ‘to-do list.’ The Cassegrain Wines is one of the most visited wineries in the region, which is also known for its excellent crafted French wines. As you indulge in the rich taste of this French collection, do not forget to wander the estate gardens and vineyards of the Cassegrain. Those who seek a quieter side to Port Macquarie can head to Little Fish Cafe and Vineyard. Known for its amazing local produce, you can fill yourselves with enriching cuisine of all types.

Learn some Surfing

If you’re a pro-surfer, then the beaches of Port Macquarie would be an excellent spot to get those moves going. Most of the beaches located here are well-known for their consistent waves. Thus, it offers a great opportunity for both – seasoned and beginner levelers – to learn and improve their surfing skills. You can even take lessons from a qualified instructor to up your confidence.

Hit the Pristine Beaches

If there’s one thing you shouldn’t miss in Port Macquarie, then it’s the pristine secluded beaches. I think describing these beaches as’ gorgeous’ would be an understatement in itself. To know what they really are, you have to visit them! Dotted along the coastline, Pilot Beach is one of my favorites to visit. Its best suited for families traveling with kids. Furthermore, you can head to Flynn’s Beach if you’re interested in taking surf lessons. The rip tides offer some of the best waves to surf.

Coffs Harbour

Coffs Harbour is one of the best places to visit between Melbourne and Gold Coast. Ironically, ask any localite about visiting Coffs Harbour, and they’d instantly say, ‘Oh, don’t miss the giant yellow banana”. ‘ ” The big banana” has become a visual stop-point for any tourist bypassing the coastal route. And yes, no trip to Coffs Harbour is truly complete without paying a visit to this classic stop.

However, there’s more to Coffs Harbour than just stopping by and admiring some spots. It’s a little paradisical town boasting all sorts of entertainment you and your children would love. From the thrills of skydiving and scuba-dive to cute dolphin shows and amusement parks, there’s no limit to what you can do in Coffs Harbour.

While you’re here, do not forget to visit its two famous attractions – Big Banana Fun Park and TreeTops Coffs Harbour. If you’re short on time, then maybe explore its beaches – Park Beach and Boambee Beach.

Byron Bay

Byron Bay is one of Australia’s coastal paradises. It’s a friendly town featuring nothing but simply sun, sand, and surf. Yes! That’s what Byron Bay is all about. I often feel that once you spend some time here, there’s no going back. You wouldn’t feel like venturing to other places because of the relaxing Australian laid-back vibes.

Byron’s hippie history stands apart from what Melbourne and Sydney are known for. Yes, the town isn’t well-loaded with attractions like major cities in Australia are, but Byron Bay does offer luxurious bay resorts, award-winning restaurants, craft breweries, and exciting cuisine.

I feel even if you wander off the streets, doing nothing – you’d still feel as if you’ve done a lot in a day.

Byron Bay has been a long-time favorite of mine. The amount of things you can do in this tiny-sized coastal town is immense. Below are some of my suggestions (which you should definitely give a go)

Visit the Iconic Lighthouse

Byron Bay is known to house some of the country’s most beautiful lighthouses. Out of all, Cape Byron Lighthouse is the one you shouldn’t miss! Perched atop the hill, this particular lighthouse has been a symbolic landmark of Byron Bay. Moreover, the place isn’t only popular for its history and great panoramic views. You can head to the top of the hill near the lighthouse to view the nature and marine life of the area.

Experience the wellness culture

Byron Bay is not only full of beaches and coastal paradises but also a place known for wellness retreats. If you seek nourishment after a long hectic holiday, this is the town where you can book a couple of wellness stay packages. Even before modern age practices, Byron Bay was considered a sacred healing ground for Aboriginals. Since then, its development began, and today we see the town full of wellness retreats & spas.

Explore Byron Bay’s beaches

I’m sure by now you must’ve seen loads of beaches. But that’s the exciting part, right? You can never get enough of the beaches this country boasts. Similar to other coastal towns, Byron Bay does have excellent pristine beaches to swim, surf, and kayak. If you haven’t tried out any water-based activities, this might be your last chance to give it a go! Some must-visit beaches in Byron Bay include Main Beach, Little Wategos Beach, Tallow Beach, and Clarkes Beach.

The above 5-day Melbourne to Gold Coast drive is a much more relaxed journey. You can tour most of the places in 4 days; however, I wouldn’t suggest crunching your schedule by cramping it too much. It’s best to rather appreciate each city in your own place, in a leisurely manner. Furthermore, I suggest adding an extra day between Canberra and Sydney to explore more of its landmarks.

No matter how you spend your time on this epic coastal road trip, give yourself a minimum of 5 days to enjoy Melbourne to Gold Coast road trip.

Where to Stay

The best part about the legendary Pacific coastal route is that there’s no shortage of accommodation options. No matter which town/city you choose, you’ll find a great bunch of varietals to choose from. Be it budgeted rooms, luxury apartments, beachfront villas, or private cabins, you’d find your preferenec as per your budget and style.

I recommend using Booking.com as your platform to book hotels throughout your hotel. I find it more useful because the rates are always more cheaper when compared to other booking engines. Moreover, if you book pre-season, you might get good discounts depending on the hotel selections and offers.

From snorkelling the crystal clear waters of the barrier reef to feeling the luxury essence of Hamilton Island, there’s a lot to see and discover at the Whitsundays.

In this article, we’ve curated an in-depth guide to the Whitsunday Islands. These include understanding the islands, why you need to visit them, best day trips, excursions, and amazing sailing tips & ideas. Along with these resources, I’ve designed a perfect itinerary for 7 days in the Whitsundays. The trip will journey to unique bay areas, islands, protected zones, snorkelling & scuba-diving sites.

About Whitsunday Islands in Australia

The Whitsundays is a large collection of 74 tropical islands based on the Great Barrier Reef. Located 55kms from the central coast of Queensland, it’s one of Australia’s most popular tourist destinations. Today, visitors travel from all over the world to witness what a marvel Whitsunday is. It’s truly an astonishing place that tops everyone’s travel bucket list.

Now, you don’t have to visit all 74 islands in one go. Of course, that’s nearly impossible unless you make this your ‘to-do’ list. However, there are a few islands that definitely stand out from the tourism point of view.

First is Hayman Island because of its luxurious inland property – InterContinental Hayman Island Resort. Hayman is definately the place for you if you fancy living up at Whitsundays private island. Next is Hamilton Island, which is more popular due to accessibility via flights to major cities. Most of the catamaran cruises and private charters depart to this island from Airlie Beach. Last but not the least, Whitsunday Island , which is home to one of the world’s most iconic beache – Whitehaven.

Most of the islands harbouring at the Whitsundays are designated national parks. So you can expect all beaches to be clean and pristine. What’s more, is that the waters provide a great opportunity for surfers and divers.

Why Visit the Whitsundays

The Whitsunday Islands brims with rich marine and great aquatic treasures. Before my trip, I felt this place was too good to be true. I had seen many pictures online but always felt, ‘Oh, this is just another island’. But, honestly? I am glad I got proved wrong. The Whitsundays are not your ordinary-so-called-beach-islands. It’s more of a magical place, where you say, ‘Oh, this is simply a paradise’.

If this is your first trip to Australia, and you’re deciding which places to keep and skip off the itinerary – then take my advice and never exclude the Whitsundays. Especially when you’re in Queensland, you’ve got to visit this bunch of tropical islands. Whitsunday bustles with white-sandy beaches, striking turquoise waters, rich flora and fauna, and amazing water sports. From swimming to surfing and kayaking, everything is possible at the Whitsundays.

You just need to be ready for the adventure!

Overview of 7 Days in the Whitsundays

From feeling the purest sands of Whitehaven to snorkelling the beaches of Hamilton, our Whitsundays itinerary explores some of the region’s best attractions and experiences. The intention of curating this trip was to include more discoveries, niche activities and unique tours to help you plan a perfect vacation to the Whitsundays. While a week-long trip sounds fun, it even gets better when you hop-on-hop-off various islands in the Whitsundays.

Ideally, you require a minimum of 4 days to explore the beauty of the Whitsunday Islands. A four-day trip is more than sufficient to experience what the fuss is all about. However, with a 7-day trip, you get to visit more islands.

If that’s what you prefer, then this trip is for you!

How to Spend 7 Days in the Whitsundays

Day 1: Explore the Airlie Beach
Day 2: Stonehaven, Hook Island
Day 3: Visit Langford Reef & Butterfly Bay
Day 4: Snorkel at Macona Inlet
Day 5: Explore Whitsunday Island
Day 6: Visit Hamilton Island
Day 7: South Molle Island

Whitsunday Islands is not only about exploring its varied islands but also experiencing some great water-based activities. In the later sections of this guide, you’ll find what about the optional tours, day-trips, long excursions, and sailing cruises.

Planning Tips for 7 Days in the Whitsundays

Now that you know what Whitsundays are and why you need to visit them let’s dig deeper into the essential planning tips.

There are plenty of ways to explore the Whitsunday Islands. The first is an ordinary tour, where you book a certain 4-day or 7-day package. The other is a private journey, where you book a bareboat sailing trip. With a bareboat itinerary – you get the flexibility & freedom of sailing anywhere across the islands. This is ideally great for families & youth looking to venture Whitsundays on their own. Regardless of your preference, both offer a great visiting experience to the Whitsundays.

The itinerary which I’ve curated below can be perfectly suited for both the exploration ways. But, if you’re choosing the bareboat version, we have some tips for you!

This section explains what a bareboat is, how you need to book them, which ones to choose, and what rental equipment to purchase. All-in-all, if you have doubts about self-touring the Whitsunday Islands, this section will clear out the answers!

What is a Bareboat?

Let’s first understand what a bareboat really is. It’s nothing but a term used for a vessel that you rent without a crew. For example, when you usually take boat trips around an island, you have a staff accompanying your journey. Be it the sailor or catering team – they are with you on your trip. But, in the bareboat scenario, the vessel belongs to you privately. There won’t be any crew, any staff joining you on this trip. This type of vessel thus gives you the flexibility of sailing your own itinerary at your own pace.

Travel Tip: You do need some prior experience sailing a bareboat or a private yacht. If you don’t, then there are few options to ride out Power Catamarans. Do check with the tour operator before you make any reservations.

Monohulls Vs Catamarans

Now that you know what a bareboat is let’s consider the options to decide which one is more suitable. I do not have much expertise in this area to guide you on which one is the best; however, I’ll put a differential list between the two popular boats, i.e. Monohulls and Catamarans.

Monohulls are yachts with a single hull. Since it has only one hull, it makes it difficult to sail against the strong winds. However, given the right conditions at the Whitsundays, Monohulls offers the best sailing experience.

Catamarans, on the other side, have two hulls. Since the stance of the heel area is large, this type of boat slightly less succumbs to strong winds. This type of bareboat is perfect for families travelling with kids.

How to Rent a Bareboat in the Whitsunday Islands?

Bareboating in Whitsundays is a unique experience and offers you the freedom to create your own sailing path. As fruitful as the experience sounds, finding a good tour operator to book your trip isn’t easy.

Get your Rental Equipment Ready

This Whitsunday itinerary for 7 days will be taking you across several different protected bay areas. And, I’m pretty sure you want to try out water adventures during your trip. Thus, I recommend you book your rental pieces of equipment in advance. The first option is to book directly from the cruise operator. The second is to book individual guided activities. I advice you to book certain activities before your trip, as its much cheaper than making reervations last moment.

Detailed Whitsundays Itinerary 7 Days

Day 1: Airlie Beach

Airlie Beach in Queensland is a perfect touring base to explore the Whitsunday Islands. During the peak season, Airlie is completely flocked with tourists and can be one of the busiest periods to spend your vacation. However, given that you travel during the shoulder season – Airline Beach is an amazing destination to spend a couple of nights.

Airlie Beach is not only a major tourist attraction but an important site for day-trippers to explore nearby islands. It acts as a gateway to enter the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef. And while it offers an incredible experience for those wanting to explore nearby islands, Airline Beach itself is a place worth exploring.

For our Whitsunday itinerary, I only included a single-night stay at Airlie Beach because I feel one day is more than sufficient to explore what this coastal base has to offer. Furthermore, below are some of the suggestions which you could do on day one itself.

Learn to Sail

Sailing in Whitsundays is a definitive experience, and this is your time to get a perfect hands-on experience sailing a charter. You could start your day at Airlie Beach by getting to know the boat’s mechanics, sailor’s terminologies, and plenty of other things. This way, you get acquainted with all sailing-related tips before your trip starts.

As soon as you arrive at Airlie Beach, you can see plenty of yacht operators offering professional and practical courses. Depending on your preference, you could purchase the plan or simply get a hands-on tour for a few hours.

Relax in the Airlie Beach Lagoon

There’s nothing more peaceful than laying down on a beach, soaking in the tropical vibes of Airlie’s beauty. If relaxation is your key priority, then the Airline Beach Lagoon makes it possible. Located right in the centre of the beach, the lagoon has become a popular tourist focal point. With no entry fees, you could literally spend all day relaxing at the lagoon.

With a fusion of man-made and natural attractions, the Airlie Beach Lagoon is one of the most-visited spots in Queensland. It’s ideal for those who want to relax by the beach, either reading a book or sipping a glass of wine.

Day 2: Stonehaven

Hook Island is one of the popular beach islands of Whitsundays. It’s most commonly known for its anchorage spots.

The term ‘anchorage‘ basically means an area where you can safely dock your ship, yacht, or charter. These anchorage spots provide safe navigable waterways for your boats to explore nearby areas and places.

For the next three days, you’ll be exploring the reefs and islands of Hook Island. As mentioned earlier, this island is a safe place for boat anchorage – you’ll be having multiple options to dock your bareboat.

The first on the list is the famous Stonehaven. As described by many travelers, Stonehaven was their ‘favorite‘ anchorage spot to relax and soak in the charming atmosphere of the Whitsundays. Fringed by extensive reefs, Stonehaven makes a great spot to witness sunsets. Moreover, you can also opt to visit the Stonehaven waterfall, which is probably the only largest waterfall in Whitsunday Islands.

Day 3: Langford Reef & Butterfly Bay

Located near Hayman Island, Langford Reef is one of the magical places to snorkel in the Whitsunday Islands. Although small in size, the island has been well-appreciated for its beauty and exciting water-bound adventures. What I like the most, is that not many people venture off to Langford Reef. So, this could be your perfect spot if you prefer lesser-tourists.

The major highlight of visiting Langford reef is its long sand spit. Despite the heavy tides that smash the coast, the spit has been a favored spot for sunbathing, swimming, and beach-picnicking.

After your relaxation, head to the northern-most portion of Hook Island to explore Butterfly Bay. For a fact, I liked this bay even more than the Langford Reef. Many scuba divers and snorkellers often find Butterfly Bay as their sweet spot to cover the island’s fascinating ecosystem. And I personally found Butterfly Bay to be the best snorkeling site in the Whitsunday Islands.

Day 4: Macona Inlet

Situated to the south of Hook Island, Macona Inlet is also one of Whitsundays popular bay areas, offering great sheltered anchorage. Often so, places like Nara Inlet and Bufferfly Bay tend to be crowded with tourists. So, in such a scenario, Macona Inlet could be a great alternative to dock overnight.

I didn’t find Macona to be a great snorkeling site, however, it’s good if you love kayaking and paddle boarding. Just rent a kayak and wander off to explore the nearby bays of Hook Island.

Day 5: Whitsunday Island

It feels like a dream to explore Whitsunday Islands in Queensland. Out of all the isles, Whitsunday is arguably the most beautiful one.

Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday is one of the most tranquil beaches on earth. It isn’t only popular in Australia but also competes with the world’s other glistening beaches. Nestled amongst the corals of the Great Barrier Reef, Whitehaven is 7km (4.3mi) long, filled with the purest of white silica sands.

Since the beach is situated within a national park, Whitehaven stands out as the most pristine beach in Australia. The beach and its marine life are well-protected, despite the many day-trippers visiting the shore. To make your exploration at Whitehaven Beach more exciting, I suggest booking a seaplane or a scuba-dive activity to explore the wonders underneath the coast.

Day 6: Hamilton Island

If I can something paradise, then that would probably be Hamilton Island.

Fringed by bushlands, palm trees, and extensive coastline, Hamilton Island just might be the place for you to witness what ‘luxury’ means. The reason why I call this a luxurious island is because of the fancy resorts that call Hamilton has its home. If that’s what you prefer, then try booking an overnight stay at qualia – one that defines the ‘pure luxury’ of Hamilton Island.

Alternatively, you can explore the island’s in-house attractions, including Hamilton Island wildlife and Dent Island. I’d rather suggest a short trip to the Hamilton Island Wildlife first, to discover Australia’s most friendly native animals. From koalas to crocodiles and bird species, you can almost spot them in the great vicinity. Then, if time permits, take a trip to Dent Island. Try a game of golf here, or paddle a kayak down the island’s coral reefs to explore what Hamilton offers.

Day 7: South Molle Island

Surrounded by an oasis of palm trees and white sands, South Molle is a tiny little island located off the coast of Shutte Harbour. There isn’t much to do around, than soaking in the pleasures of your last day at Whitsunday. I would probably give a try to some activities, if you regret missing out on something. Just like the other islands, South Molle does offer great experiential tours for you to explore the best of Whitsunday Islands.

More or less, you could simply spend this day relaxing and cherishing the memorable trip you just had!

The main interest lies in discovering experiences & niche activities nearby Yarra Valley. If you ask me, is 3 days in Yarra Valley sufficient? I would definitely say a yes. But, probably a no – if you need to visit nearby towns and scenic attractions. And that’s the best part.

Yarra Valley opens up a gateway of opportunities to discover Australia's most impressive towns. 

In a town known as Healesville, you find the best of the country’s food and wine scene. Be it hipster bars, glowing nightclubs, galleries, and pubs – there’s every bit of Australian flair to compete against the greatest of the cities. Next to Healesville is a lovely town called Warburton, best known for boasting natural wonders and scenic drive routes. Venture more, and you’ll find yourself in Marysville – where there’s a paradise for all adrenaline junkies.

The point is, when you visit Yarra Valley, you open up different possibilities to extend your journey. So, if you had planned a 3 day trip to this most exciting wine region – be sure to check out worthwhile places. Experience every ounce of the region’s most discoverable things, and find pleasures that can place a memorable vacation in your heart.

Overview of Yarra Valley 3 Day Itinerary

Let’s now give you a gist of what to expect in this 3-day Yarra Valley itinerary.

Firstly, although the days seem shorter for this trip, 3 days in Yarra Valley is more than enough to cherish what the region offers. The intention behind curating this itinerary was to design a perfect weekend getaway from the nearest city. Here, in this case – it’s Melbourne.

You’ll start your journey from Melbourne and then experience the best things to do. These include visiting the vineyards of Yarra, hiking, bush-walking, sampling the local flavors, exploring the Dandenong Ranges National Park, riding the Puffing Billy steam train, and getting close to the Australian native wildlife.

Itinerary for 3 Days in Yarra Valley

Day 1: Melbourne to Olinda
Day 2: Olinda to Healesville
Day 3: Healesville to Warburton

The total journey for the above-designed route is roughly 117kms. Suppose you drive non-stop from Melbourne to Warburton; it would take approximately 2hr 6mins.

Likewise, you could cover these destinations in a single-day trip. However, I won’t recommend that – because you’ll miss out on places and things to do along the way. It’s best to give some time to admire and appreciate the beauty of Yarra Valley. Thus, a minimum of 3 days is recommended to explore this wine region.

Besides the things included in our 3 days itinerary, I’ve recommended a few more optional tours and guided excursions. You can add these options to your trip, customize it and make a new one out of it.

A Detailed Yarra Valley 3 Day Itinerary

Now that you’re well versed with the planning tips, here’s a brief itinerary for y0u to spend 3 days in Yarra Vallley:

Day 1: Melbourne to Olinda

Driving Time: 53 minutes (49.6kms)

Located 50kms from Melbourne CBD, Olinda is one of the charming villages of Yarra Valley. Nestled atop the scenic Dandenong Ranges, this small town packs some exciting things to see and do. Since this will be your first stop, I’ve listed some of the top things to do in Olinda on your day.

Visit the Dandenong Ranges Botanical Garden

As locals say, ‘no visit to Yarra Valley is complete without exploring the Dandenong Ranges Botanical Garden’ – I definitely feel it’s true to a large extent. The Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden is one of the state’s most premier gardens, overlooking the expansive views of the Yarra Valley. The place is a treat for all avid plant lovers, known to harbor many exotic species, such as azaleas, camellias, rhododendrons, and daffodils.

What I loved the most about this botanic garden – is its ever-changing landscape. Cometh any season, and you’ll discover the seasonal beauty in its gardens. This makes the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden a year-round exploration site.

As you wind through the valleys of Dandenong’s picturesque lands, take garden tours to explore this amazing 43 hectares of land. Furthermore, head out east to the R.J. Hamer Arboretum, consisting of a BBQ facility and a lookout area. If you prioritize relaxation, head to the Valley Picnic Ground for a quick snack.

Explore the Cloudehill Gardens

Take a short walk from the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden to visit another popular attraction – Cloudehill Garden & Nursery. I have to say that I found the latter one to be more impressive than the Dandenong Gardens. The Cloudhill bustles with a lush green range of flowers and plant species, housing some of the country’s most unique varietals. Venture this nursery to find bluebell woodlands, peony gardens, beautiful paved stone paths, and an amazing spring shrub walk.

Drench yourselves at Olinda Falls

You may ask – a waterfall close to Melbourne city? Is that for real?

It surely is! Just beneath Mount Dandenong lies the famous Olinda Falls – one of the prettiest waterfalls in the entire Yarra Valley region. The Olinda Falls Picnic area’s beautiful pathway leads you to this famous fall, where you can picnic and relax at your own convenience. You might also want to check out the Sherbrooke Falls, which is rather a small version of the Olinda Falls.

Please note: The walk leading to Olinda Falls might get little tricky after heavy rainfalls. Ensure that you wear proper hiking shoes to tackle any unforeseen obstacles. Also, the trail leading to the falls is a medium grade bush-walk. If you feel its too much, you can skip the hike and rest near the picnic area.

Explore Galleries, Restaurants & Workshops

Spend the rest of your afternoon exploring the many workshops, art galleries, restaurants, and cafes spread across the Olinda region. During my tour, I visited the Only Mine Chocolate Factory, which is located right in the city center. It was fascinating to watch the locals creating their art on chocolate-based products. Oh, if you can’t resist, then sample a few!

Furthermore, you can explore the local art store of Touchstone Craft Gallery to browse through some of their famous artwork. All the items displayed here have been made by over 250 craftspeople. So, try to purchase if you like something.

End your day one visit by hitting the right restaurants located in Olinda. I visited Pie in the Sky, which specializes in making handmade cakes, pastries, and gourmet pies. It’s also a good spot to take away some light snacks. If you feel like going heavy on your lunch or dinner, I recommend checking out these places – Dudley’s, Citrine Bistro & Bar, and Ranges at Olinda.

Day 2: Olinda to Healesville

Driving Time: 37 minutes (38kms)

Start off your day by journeying to Healesville – home to regional markets, artisanal producers, up-market stores, boutique hotels, and pubs & cafes. The standout architecture of the buildings on the main road, coupled with niche discoveries, makes Healesville a hard miss.

Get Acquainted with Native Wildlife

As soon as you reach the town, visit the Healesville Sanctuary wildlife park. Get yourself greeted with over 200 species of friendly native animals, including koalas, kangaroos, platypus, dingo, and Tasmanian devils. Apart from spotting these species, there’s a lot to do, such as exploring the main track, woodlands track, treetop boardwalk, and much more.

Tickets & Membership: The entry fee for Healesville Santuary is $40 for adults, $36 for senior citizens, and free for children (aged 0-15). You can also get your membership at $10 a month over 12 months.

Try & Sample Local Wines

Head to TarraWarra Museum of Art in the afternoon, located on the Healesville-Yarra Glen Road. This will be the most memorable moment of your Yarra Valley itinerary, as you taste award-winning pinot noir and sample different wine varietals. While you relish the flavour of these Australian wines, don’t forget to marvel at the contemporary art displayed at TarraWarra Museum.

If the experience isn’t enough, then make your way to the intriguing wine cellar doors that house the Healesville region. Domaine Chandon is one you shouldn’t miss, as they offer great bush-walking vineyard tours. You can also meet the locals who produce wine and learn some interesting history from them.

On day three of the Yarra Valley itinerary, we will be taking a tour of the beautiful town of Warburton. A 28-minute drive from Healesville, Warby (as the residents call it) is one of the fascinating places to visit in the Yarra Valley. The town is nestled amongst the dense-forested hills of the Yarra Ranges, which makes it perfect for immersing yourselves in nature.

There’s a lot to see and do near Warburton, including hiking around Californian Redwood Forest, swimming at the upper Yarra river, bush-walking at Mt. Donna Buang, and indulging in the local food & wine.

Wander through the Warburton Redwood Forest

Warburton Redwood Forest is one of the town’s primary tourist regions. The place has gone all gaga over its beauty, offering different exploration opportunities for tourists and locals. Don’t be surprised if you see a flock of beckoning day-trippers hiking or walking the magical forests of Warburton.

Warburton Redwood Forest harbors thousands of Californian Redwoods. These long, towering Sequoias have greatly attracted visitors traveling from Melbourne or other cities. Since it’s one of the photogenic spots, expect some crowd.

Explore a Myriad of Hiking Trails

You’re wrong if you thought Yarra Valley is all about food and wine. Let’s break the ‘most-obvious’ thing because Yarra has much more to offer, including some adventure experiences. And hiking is certainly one of them.

I believe some of the best hiking trails can be found in the Yarra Ranges. I am sure there are many around the region, but specifically in Yarra, the trails are much more diverse and unique. Maybe it’s the densely forested areas or the rich vegetation that calls Yarra its home.

I encourage you try out some trails (if time permits) when you visit Warburton.

La La Falls: This walk is best-suited for families who want to cover a short distance of Warburton’s famous trails. The total path is 3.2km long, leading you to the famous La La Falls.

Yarra River Trail: This trail is more challenging, and requires moderate fitness levels to complete. The Yarra River Trail runs 6km long, leading to picturesque lands and viewpoints.

Relax, Swim, or Kayak the Upper Yarra River

In summers, you’ll find the Upper Yarra River crowded with tourists. However, visit any off-season – and you’ll be greeted with a much calmer environment. Back when I visited Warburton, this was one of my favorite places to explore. It doesn’t really strike you as much of a tourist attraction but still provides a pleasing atmosphere to soothe a tiresome journey.

Most locals in Warby swim or kayak the cool waters of Yarra to beat the glaring temperatures. If swimming isn’t your game, purchase a tube or lilo from a shop to float around these waters. Alternatively, kayaking in this region is one of the popular things to do.

Bam Bam Italina: Located on Belgrave-Gembrook Road, this was another place I thought deserves mention. If you cherish Italia cuisine, Bam Bam Italina is your best bet. Try their mushroom pizza, buffalo mozzarella, and pork & fennel sausage to savor your appetite.

Blueberry Farm Winery: This place is a well-known winery in Yarra. In one of the cellar doors, you can sample wine, try their cider, and relish a local, regional platter. Moreover, you can also purchase their homegrown jams, toppings, and condiments.

With walking trails leading you to some of Fleurieu’s best views, putting them inside your bucket-list adventures is worth mentioning.

Onkaparinga River National Park

The beauty of experiencing the hikes at Onkaparinga River National Park is its diversity. With over 17 hiking trails, the park covers all types of surfaces for you to walk upon. From easy flat walks to rugged cliffs, there’s everything to suit your hiking style. The most popular trail of Onkaparinga is Punchbowl Lookout Trail. This 2km stretch is best suited for families who merely want to wander through the deep forests of the national park.

To try something challenging, we suggest taking the Gorge Hike. As the name suggests, the trail ventures through deep gorges and densely forested park areas. For any beginner-level hiker, the stretch can take 4 hrs to complete.

The Blowhole Beach Hike will sweat you down to the core for those who love adrenaline fun. The descent portion is relatively flat, with no such challenge; however, the uphill burns you. But, the beauty of the trail attracts the tourists the most. You’ll need good fitness levels to pass this trial, so ensure you’re equipped with energy bars & healthy snacks. On average, the trail takes 2.5 hrs to complete.

Popular Walking Trails of the Fleurieu Peninsula

Heysen Trail

Heysen Trail is one of South Australia’s iconic hiking trails. Stretching from the Flinders Ranges to the Fleurieu Peninsula, the trail covers a distance of a total of 1200km. The entire route of the Heysen Trail is broken down into several sections with moderate difficulty levels. However, the portion falling on the Fleurieu Peninsula region (75.5km of length) is the one you shouldn’t miss!

The smaller sections, such as the Waitpinga Cliffs to Kings Beach, are even a more spectacular version of the Heysen Trail. This particular portion of the trail ventures through the coastal scrub, leading you to the best ocean views of the Fleurieu.
